Elder Abuse & Neglect

Elder abuse is the mistreatment or neglect of a person 60 years of age or older by an individual known to them. It includes: physical abuse, emotional abuse, caretaker neglect, financial exploitation and sexual abuse.

Greater Springfield Senior Services investigates hundreds of reports of elder abuse and neglect each year. Working with local hospitals, social service agencies, police and the courts, GSSSI's Protective Service Workers assist vulnerable elders in securing support services to eliminate or alleviate the abuse.

Reporting Elder Abuse & Neglect

Anyone who has reasonable cause to believe an elder has been abused may make a report. All calls are confidential and may be made anonymously.

Under Massachusetts state law, most human service agencies, law enforcement and medical professionals are required to make reports of suspected abuse.

Elder at Risk (EAR)Program

The term "elder-at-risk" refers to seniors who are unable to meet their essential needs for food, clothing, shelter, personal care or medical care and are refusing assistance from informal or formal supports. They may be self-neglecting because of physical and/or mental impairments, substance abuse or other serious problems.

GSSSI's EAR workers use patient, supportive casework to build a trusting relationship with the elder. The goal of the program is to alleviate immediate safety risks and work with the elder to accept services through regular channels.
