Openings for Volunteer Group Leaders

If you are interested in a flexible volunteer commitment, want to learn more and share information about healthy living, and want to have fun, consider being a group leader for one of the programs described below.

Volunteers must have good communication and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, dependability and a willingness to lead small groups of older adults. Volunteers will participate in free, comprehensive training to bring this evidence-based curriculum to local participants. A Matter of Balance Fall Prevention

Many experience concerns about falling that can restrict their activity. A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among adults. The interactive program includes eight two-hour classes presented by trained group leaders using a detailed training manual and two instructional videos. Program components include:

  • Group discussions
  • Mutual problem solving
  • Exercises to improve strength, coordination and balance

Healthy Eating for Successful Living

This six-week program was specifically designed for those who want to learn more about nutrition and how small changes in eating habits can promote better health. Group leaders help to create a supportive environment where participants focus on goal setting, problem solving, self assessment and management of dietary patterns. Participants learn to:

  • Decipher food labels
  • Plan healthy and appealing menus
  • Make better informed choices at the grocery store

My Life, My Health: Chronic Disease Self-Management

This six week course is for those who live with the daily challenges of one or more chronic conditions. A variety of topics are covered, including:

  • Dealing with difficult emotions
  • Communication skills
  • Making informed treatment decisions
  • Muscle relaxation and guided imagery
  • Pain and fatigue management
  • Healthy eating
  • Medication usage
  • Physical activity and exercise and more
