Caregiver Support
The caregiver role can be emotionally, physically, and financially overwhelming, even though it is willingly undertaken and often a source of great personal satisfaction. Whether the caregiver is a husband or wife caring for a frail spouse, or a son or daughter attending to the needs of an aged parent, Greater Springfield Senior Services' Caregiver Support program can help.
The goal of the program is to provide caregivers with the essential training and support needed to help them sustain their efforts. Services include:
Personalized Consultations
Our compassionate elder care advisors are experts in finding the best possible solution for your needs. They will:
- Listen to your concerns and answer your questions
- Provide you with information about elder care programs and services in your community
- Make referrals and objective recommendations about the housing, health, social, financial and legal choices that are available to you
- Assist with completing applications and claims forms
- Help you to identify payment sources-you may even be eligible for low-cost or no-cost programs
As a nonprofit organization, we have no financial interest in providing a particular service or in suggesting more services than you need.
Respite Time Off
The C.A.R.E..program offers respite scholarships to people needing time off from their caregiving responsibilities for activities such as shopping, medical appointments and social activities.
Respite care may be provided in the home or at a community adult day care. In-home respite is provided by certified home care aides, and services may include personal care, meal preparation, and medication reminders. Adult day care provides supervision, social activities and lunch for elders who need daytime support outside the home. Overnight respite may be provided at an assisted living facility, nursing home or rest home.
To be eligible, the individual must be at least 60 years of age and have functional impairments and needs that require daily care.
Applications for C.A.R.E. awards are available at local Councils on Aging, Senior Centers, and by calling Greater Springfield Senior Services at 413-781-8800. Completed applications will be reviewed and the Greater Springfield Senior Services Caregiver Liaison will schedule an in-home meeting to determine the type of service required.
ACE Grants
Assistance to Caregivers of Elders grants provide limited financial assistance for caregivers who encounter needs that cannot be met by other resources. The grants are limited to up to $750 per applicant per calendar year and may be used for such things as:
- Ramp construction
- Installation of safety railings
- Chores services
- Home maintenance projects
Applications are available at Councils on Aging or by calling GSSSI's Information and Referral department. Grant applications are reviewed by a committee and a notice of approval is sent within 30 days.
To be eligible for services through the Caregiver Support Program, caregivers must be providing care for someone who is at least 60 years of age who lives within Greater Springfield Senior Services' twelve-town service area. Persons who are age 55 or older who are raising a grandchild under the age of 18, or are disabled, may be eligible as well. Priority will be given to those caregivers who are the most economically challenged and can demonstrate a need for assistance. While there are no charges for the services, donations are encouraged to help continue the program.
These programs are part of the nationwide Family Caregiver Support Program and are funded through Title III-E of the federal Older Americans Act.
